Obsessions can be of a violent nature and the compulsive actions may become dangerous or life threatening to the person with the condition or to others. Sexual obsessions may also result in inappropriate acts and perversions.
Compulsive behavior may not always be ritually performed. In some cases, the compulsion changes from time to time, usually gradually. These compulsions provide some relief from the anxiety the person has, but it is only slight and doesn’t last for long.
Biological Processes at the Heart of the Problem
The body of evidence now supports the belief that OCD is the result of biological factors more than life experiences. Although experiences might be a trigger, neurotransmitters have some bearing on the disorder because medications have been shown to affect serotonin and help improve the symptoms for many test subjects.
