Do You Suffer from Social Interaction Anxiety?Social phobias that include social interaction anxiety may be common, but they still are a very unpleasant experience for those who have them. Social anxiety affects more than seven percent of the world’s population by some estimates, and is the third largest problem in mental health care.

The chances that any particular person might be afflicted with social anxiety stands at about thirteen percent. While there are differing degrees of the problem, it also affects some people a little differently than it does others. Where one person may be unable to be seen in public without a rush of anxiety, another might have only certain social situations that bother them.

The inability to meet or socialize with other people regardless of who they are is an example of a deep-set social interaction problem. Most people with social anxiety are hesitant to meet anyone new because of the traumatic experience it brings, but some can barely identify with people they have known their entire lives.

The Difference between Social Phobia and Shyness

Shyness can best be seen as a minor social phobia, but it can often only be towards certain individuals who pose a threat to some facet of the shy person’s life. The unknown poses some amount of reservation with almost anyone. Generally, shyness is something that quickly disappears after a comfort zone is reached, as the shy person becomes more knowledgeable of a person or situation.

Social anxiety has little to do with how much a person knows about another and often the apprehension never goes away toward other people even after becoming acquainted with them. Severe social interaction problems make meeting with any other individual difficult.

A shy person may or may not be terribly concerned about others making judgments, but the person with social interaction anxiety constantly thinks that everyone is watching and weighing their performance. The fear of appearing stupid or unable to perform personal duties fuels anxiety and interferes with the accomplishment of even the simplest tasks.

How Does Social Anxiety Affect You?

If you haven’t seen any improvement in your anxiety situation even after seeking professional help, you obviously are living a life that is not very fulfilling. You might want to take a moment to consider exactly how much of a normal existence you are losing each day that you face your adversity.

On the days you must interact with other people, you probably lose a great amount of productivity, maybe to the point that it limits how much income you earn. The quality of life suffers so much that you may think that your entire existence is not worthwhile. Reaching this point is about as low as an individual can sink into social anxiety, and it should instill a sense of need to take action very soon.
